Remembrance Sunday falls on 8 November 2026. Reading’s main commemoration is run by the council and the Mayor: a service at Reading Minster, a parade through the town centre and wreath-laying at the war memorial in Forbury Gardens, with the two-minute silence at 11am. Armistice Day, Wednesday 11 November, has its own short ceremony at the same memorial.

How the day ran in 2025

Reading Borough Council publishes the arrangements about a week ahead, at the same web address every year. Its 2025 announcement, last updated on 4 November 2025, set out the day:

  • 9.25am: service at Reading Minster of St Mary the Virgin, open to everyone, with readings by the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, the Mayor of Reading and the Bishop of Reading.
  • About 10.25am: a parade through the town led by the Waterloo Band and Bugles of 7 Rifles, marching to Forbury Gardens. The council said “anyone can join in the parade”.
  • At the war memorial: poppy wreaths laid, a two-minute silence at 11am, and a performance by a Ukrainian choir.

The 2024 arrangements, which the council published by 7 November 2024 (archived copy), followed the same pattern: the Minster service from 9.25am, the march leaving the Minster at around 10.15am, the ceremony at the Forbury War Memorial with the Ukrainian choir Kryla, and a two-minute silence at 11am. That year both events were also live-streamed on the council’s Facebook page.

Armistice Day

On 11 November itself the council holds a short ceremony at the Forbury Gardens war memorial. In both 2024 and 2025 the Mayor led a two-minute silence there at 11am, and the public were welcome. In 2026 the 11th is a Wednesday.

Getting there

Reading Minster and Forbury Gardens are both in the town centre. Our parking in Reading page lists the nearest car parks, and any road closures for the parade will be on Reading roadworks and travel once the council publishes them.
