Reading Daily is an independent news and information site for the borough of Reading. Much of what changes the town sits in long public paperwork that few people have time to read, so we read it and report what it says.

Where we cover

The borough is compact and the neighbourhoods within it are distinct: the town centre, Caversham and Emmer Green north of the Thames, Tilehurst and Norcot to the west, Southcote and Coley, Katesgrove and Whitley to the south, and Battle towards Oxford Road. What happens in one of them rarely stays there.

The reporting standard

The borough council publishes its planning register, its committee papers and its accounts. The police publish crime data street by street. Every food inspection is published, and the statutory notices go into The Gazette. That is where our stories start, and the link back sits in the piece so you can read the original. Much of the monitoring is automated because there is far too much of it to read by hand. None of the facts are, and where a document can honestly be read two ways we say so. The practical pages show when they were last checked against the source.
